a hazy shade of winter.
It's a soup day.
It's cold, windy, and down right miserable outside today. In search of warmth and comfort, I decided to make my grandmother's chicken noodle soup. I put a record on, turned up the heat, and got busy.
As I was making the noodles, I thought about how many times I watched my grandma do the same thing for my siblings and I growing up. As kids, she always had a pot of that soup on in the winter while we played out in the snow. After a snowman was constructed or snowball war had ended (no doubt resulting in one of the kids crying), we'd run in the kitchen with cold hands, and she'd rub them to get warm. She'd then place us in front of the heater to thaw out as she'd finish lunch for us. As we grew older, she'd have a hot bowl of soup waiting for us after a day sledding or snowboarding in the mountains. We'd walked in with wet feet on her clean floor (she'd never say a thing) and sit at her table telling her all about our day, as she'd busy around the kitchen hardly sitting still.
She was warmth.
Oh, how I miss her.
(pst.. After helping my mom cook this over the holidays and now today, I'm considering myself an expert (ha) and crossing #19 off my list.)

ReplyDeleteand i know soup days. today felt like one.
i made my own chicken noodle soup back in december, but now i'm feeling silly for even saying that because i definitely did not make my own noodles! i bet that would make it so much better...i'll have to try that next time :)
ReplyDeletemy mom's signature dish is chicken and noodles. It was her mom's too. She rolls out the noodles and everything. I havent had it in years, but I think about it all the time. I haven so many memories associated with it.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful pics, and I totally understand the feelings towards grandma's cooking- one of the best things in the world!
ReplyDeleteThis year has been one of the hardest with me missing her and thinking a lot about her. You know I realized the other day I never once heard her complain, not once. She was the pinnacle of selflessness. I wish we would have had more time with her, such a great woman.
