the truth about cats and dogs.

Here's the ugly truth: I'm not a pet person.Like.. at all.

So, when I read this the other day, I realized that this summed up my feelings perfectly.
I have no affinity for animals.  I don't hate animals and I would never hurt an animal; I just don't actively care about them. When a coworker shows me cute pictures of her dog I struggle to respond correctly, like an autistic person who has been taught to recognize human emotions from flash cards. In short, I am the worst.
                                                                           - Tina Fey in the book  Bossypants
And yes, I grew up with a brother that asked for a pet every Christmas. We went from gerbils to birds to cats and dogs and well, the truth is.. I just didn't really care if they weren't there in anymore (a.k.a missing, given away, in pet heaven.)In short.. I am the worst too.

I'm not sure Graham will ever recover from this seeing as he wants a horse blue dane, and is more than willing to have him hang out with us in our studio apartment. I think I might lose this battle one of these days years when our kid begs for one. (maybe.)

  1. I feel exactly the same way. I'm actually kind of happy my husband is allergic, because I have an easier answer to the question of "can we get a dog?" than the real one, which is "because I don't want one".

  3. lol @ Mary's comment. I'm just gonna say it: I hate pets. I will never have one. I'm disturbed by thought of living with an animal.

  4. I am a sort of kind of animal lover (not over the top but I enjoy them) with a new puppy that is very cute but driving me out of my FREAKING MIND. I hope it gets easier.

My sister has a great dane and he is the chillest most relaxed massively huge dog ever.

  5. i'm laughing so hard! i'm an animal lover like your brother, so I can't understand the detached feeling, but all i can say is.. i hope one day G does change your mind about puppies. because they CAN be the best thing ever... ;)

  9. i'm with kate lines, i like animals but they're annoying. i never had a pet growing up and so i feel a lot like you and tina too. but then we got some cats last year and i loved them! then they got annoying. then we got rid of them. now i vaguely miss them. i like chickens because you can eat them and their eggs. does that count?

  10. I kind of wish I was like that. I care too much about my pets. When my first dog died I was devastated for weeks. I have two dogs right now and one of them has cancer. Once they are gone I'm not going to get any more because losing pets just makes me too sad.

  11. hi.
joe is YOU in this situation and i am graham.
    except i don't want a dane.
i want a little lovey cuddly puppy.
i love animals! but we're all allowed our differences, so i'm not going to hold it against you. ;)

ps. i love bossypants. i feel like i relate to tina a lot. evenmore, i think i relate more to liz lemon. and they differ a little.

  12. I don't care for pets either and my excuse comes easy when I can just blame it on Rob's allergies! Ha. We do have a turtle...turtles are ok in my book. I grew up with stray cats hanging out in our broken down boat but there was no attachment.

  13. Ah glad to hear that someone else feels the same way. My roomate really wants to get a pet and asked me if i would be willing to share the expenses for the food. I said no. I still feel horrible. But I rather spent my money on activities with people. :)

  14. oh kate kate kate. i knew we would be best friends in real life. i HATE pets. i just finished bossypants and thought the same thing when i read that part! i could not agree more.

i just can't get over the cat or dog's little bum hole going poop outside and then coming inside and SITTING ON YOUR COUCH! GROSS! THEY DON'T WIPE! or the hair! who wants to live with dog/cat hair everywhere? so nast.

    so, anyway, i agree.

  15. So crazazy, when I read this book last summer I was like THAT'S ME! And my next thought was 'I'm bloggin this!' But I never did bc I am a bad blogger, but you lady, you are on it. Props and kudos and snaps! Its like something we can never admit to people or they look at us like we cray cray. We need to unite in a sisterhood! Too far...?

  17. pet haters unite! hahahaha robin's comment made me laugh too.

this was really funny to me. I think all the cleaning issues bug me about pets/dogs. I'm on the fence because I happened to birth a little boy who loves dogs with all his heart. I'm sure I'll crack one day and we'll put up with a dog for all the "right reasons?" I see the novelty.
